Mariam Malament: A story of a tooth: From a restoration to an implant. Which one is complication free?

The shift towards minimally invasive dentistry is obvious. The goal is to preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible and extend pulpal vitality. Another noticeable switch in restorative dentistry is metal-free restorations. These tooth-colored restorations must survive in demanding multi-factorial oral conditions. The presentation will overview the findings of clinical studies on the survival of, and endodontic complications of glass ceramic complete and partial coverage restorations. Additionally, the presentation will address the decision-making process of replacing teeth with implants. What should a clinician expect with implant-retained restorations and how can the complications be minimized will also be discussed.

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  • To identify the factors determining long-term successful outcome of ceramic restorations.

  • Assess the incidence of endodontic therapy after receiving either complete or partial coverage glass ceramic restorations.

  • To evaluate the clinical variables influencing the incidence of endodontic therapy in prosthodontic treatment.

  • To review the possible complications associated with implant retained restorations.

Colin Maclachlan: Resilient by Design: Leadership When it Matters Most

ONLY OPEN TO TIER I MEMBERS

Colin Maclachlan, star of Channel Four's captivating reality TV drama SAS: Who Dares Wins and Channel 5’s ‘Secrets of the SAS’ is an operator with over 30 years of security and risk related experience. Colin joined the army in 1989 and after 9 years in the Royal Scots passed selection first time aged 23 into 22 SAS. Colin was fortunate enough to have been involved in some of the more high profile and daring missions of the recent period. Only a handful of men have been involved in hostage negotiations, hostage rescue and been a hostage themselves and Colin is one of them. He waded through stinking swamps in Sierra Leone in West Africa to hunt down the West Side Boys, a guerilla gang holding five British soldiers hostage. It was a mission so daring and dangerous they nicknamed it Operation Certain Death. The SAS recce teams secured the hostages' building and neutralised any West Side Boys prior to the main assault arriving and secured the prison building before the rest of the unit arrived wiping out the terrorists in 2000.

He was also the first sniper on the scene when a hijacked Afghan flight with 180 passengers landed in London in the same year, sparking a stand-off that lasted four days and was the longest standing hostage siege on UK soil to date. But four years later Colin found himself on the other side of a rescue mission after he was taken hostage in the Iraqi city of Basra. Blindfolded, battered and stripped naked, he felt a gun pressed to his head and heard them pull the trigger in what was a mock execution. Father-of-two Colin only survived long enough for British troops to rescue him because the terrorists who held him wanted to film his suffering in a propaganda video before they executed him.

Colin left the SAS shortly after doing an exchange programme with both Delta Force and Seal Team 6 and after doing security consultancy for the Saudi Royal Family, A-List Celebrities and US Media Networks decided to fund himself through university where he attained a First Class MA (Hons.) in History from Edinburgh University and an M.Litt in Terrorism from St. Andrews University. Colin is now involved in TV, Book, Radio and Video Games and also does a lot with charity being involved as Ambassador for the Lee Rigby Foundation, Pilgrim Bandits and NSPCC among others. He has also founded his own charity Who Dares Cares that aims to link and support veterans as well as others that encounter stress.

Having had both an exciting and varied career, Colin is an excellent speaker on a wide variety of topics including Resilience, Teamwork, Leadership, Risk, Motivation, Conflict Resolution, Change Management, Negotiation, A.I and Elite Performance. He is also an experienced presenter and host for events and is co-founder of Stoic Events, a team building organization. His autobiography entitled The Pilgrim is out in 2025.

This dynamic keynote delivers a compelling blend of storytelling and practical strategies to strengthen leadership, resilience, planning, and decision-making under pressure.

Led by former SAS operator and Who Dares Wins star Colin MacLachlan, the session draws from high-stakes military missions to explore how elite teams lead through uncertainty and change. Through a mix of powerful insights and real-world lessons, participants will gain tools to navigate complex challenges, communicate with clarity, and lead with confidence in high-pressure environments.

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  • Apply principles of resilience and strategic planning to lead effectively through uncertainty and high-pressure situations.

  • Demonstrate improved communication and decision-making skills for managing risk and leading teams with clarity and confidence.

Gingival recession defects and mucogingival deformities are common periodontal findings in the general population. Successful management of cases may look different based on varying clinical presentations, including: presence of bone loss, keratinized tissue width, extent of existing gingival recession defects, and presence of non-carious cervical lesions. Additionally, the management of soft-tissue deficiencies both prior to and after implant placement often entails a combined restorative and surgical approach in order to achieve ideal esthetic results. This session will provide a practical and comprehensive overview of soft-tissue management strategies at both teeth and implants.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental goals, benefits, and limitations of soft tissue grafting

  • Identify mucogingival deformities at teeth and implants and determine when surgical intervention is indicated – and when it is not.

  • Explore interdisciplinary treatment planning and sequencing strategies to optimize esthetic outcomes.

Noshir Mehta: Concepts of Dental Occlusion in Function, Parafunction, and Dysfunction: It's not just the Teeth

Orthodontic, prosthodontic, full denture, and implant occlusions all have their own treatment concepts, but the humans, in whose mouths these treatments are conducted, do not change. Modern theories of dental occlusion require a change from CR and CO to a more inclusive head, face, and neck functional assessment, taking into account head and body posture. Knowledge of anatomy, neurology, and physiology and an understanding of three-dimensional maxillomandibular jaw positions that would be functional in normal jaw movements and parafunctional during sleep has become essential for the dentist to assess. We are now seeing TMD and sleep apnea patients in greater numbers. Dental occlusion is “not just the teeth”.

Shawn Achor: Year-End Celebration/ The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance

After spending 12 years at Harvard University, Shawn Achor has become one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between happiness and success. His research on mindset made the cover of Harvard Business Review, his TED talk is one of the most popular of all time with more than 13 million views, and his lecture airing on PBS has been seen by millions. Mr Achor has lectured or worked with more than a third of the Fortune 100 companies, as well as the NFL, the NBA, the Pentagon and the White House. He is the author of New York Times best-selling books The Happiness Advantage (2010) and Big Potential (2018). Mr Achor has now lectured in more than 50 countries speaking to CEOs in China, doctors in Dubai, schoolchildren in South Africa, and farmers in Zimbabwe.

Most business is done under the guideline that if you work harder you will be more successful, and then you will be happy. This formula is scientifically backward. More than a decade of research shows training your brain to be positive first actually leads to greater success at work. In fact, only 25 percent of job success is predicted by intelligencethe rest is determined by your optimism, social support network, and the ability to manage energy and stress in a positive way. Based on his book, The Happiness Advantage, and research studying top performers at Harvard and the world’s largest banks and fortune 500 companies, Mr. Achor explains what positive psychology is, how much we can change, and practical applications and strategies for reaping the happiness advantage in the midst of change and challenge.

Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of positivity— that brains in a positive state are more imaginative, responsive and flexible.

  • Recalibrate and move away from negativity, doubt and worry with practices that elevate their daily experience and maximize happiness.
